What size leisure battery do I need for my campervan?

For basic needs (LED lights, phone charging, water pump), a 100Ah lithium battery is sufficient for 2–3 days off-grid. If you run a compressor fridge, laptop and other devices, 200–300Ah gives comfortable headroom. Lithium batteries provide 80–100% usable capacity compared to just 50% for lead-acid, so a 100Ah lithium replaces a 200Ah lead-acid battery in practical terms.

Why choose lithium over lead-acid leisure batteries?

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries last 3,000–5,000 charge cycles versus 300–500 for lead-acid. They weigh roughly half as much, charge 5x faster, provide stable voltage throughout discharge, and deliver their full rated capacity. Although the upfront cost is higher, the total cost per cycle is significantly lower over the battery's lifetime.

Can I charge a leisure battery with solar panels while driving?

Yes. Roof-mounted solar panels charge your leisure battery whenever there is daylight, whether you are driving, parked up, or away from the vehicle. For charging while driving from the alternator, you will also want a DC-DC charger which works alongside solar input to keep your battery topped up through the vehicle's charging system.
