Why Is My Camping Air Conditioner Running but Not Cooling?

If your camping or caravan air conditioner is humming away but the air still feels warm, it’s frustrating – especially after a long day on the road. Before you assume the unit is faulty, there are a few simple checks you can work through to rule out common issues.

1. Check the power supply and campsite limits

Many touring air conditioners are designed to run within specific power limits. If your campsite hook-up is restricted – for example 6A rather than 10A – your unit may not be receiving enough power to start the compressor properly.

  • Confirm the amp rating of your campsite supply.
  • Avoid running high-draw appliances (kettles, heaters, hairdryers) on the same circuit as your air conditioner.
  • If the unit repeatedly trips the breaker, switch everything else off and try again.

2. Make sure the filters and air inlets are clear

Dust, lint and pet hair can build up on the air intake filter and reduce airflow through the system. When less air passes over the evaporator, the unit struggles to remove heat from your caravan or camper.

  • Switch the unit off and disconnect from the mains.
  • Remove the intake filter following the instructions in your Mestic manual.
  • Vacuum or gently wash the filter, allow it to dry completely, then refit.

3. Consider the size of your space and ambient temperature

Air conditioners are rated for a certain interior volume and outside temperature. In very hot conditions, or in larger caravans and motorhomes, it can take longer to feel a noticeable drop in temperature.

  • Close windows, roof vents and doors to keep cool air inside.
  • Use blinds or curtains on sun-facing windows to reduce heat load.
  • Give the unit at least 20–30 minutes to bring the temperature down.

4. Check your cooling mode and temperature setting

It sounds simple, but it’s easy to leave an air conditioner in fan-only mode or set too high a target temperature.

  • Confirm that the unit is set to cooling mode, not fan or dehumidify.
  • Set the temperature at least 4–6°C below the current room temperature.
  • Use a thermometer inside the caravan to monitor the change in temperature.

5. Make sure there is enough space around the unit

If airflow around the unit is blocked, heat cannot be expelled effectively. This is especially important for portable or split units inside awnings or compact spaces.

  • Keep soft furnishings and luggage away from vents and grills.
  • Ensure any exhaust ducting is as straight and short as possible.
  • Avoid enclosing the unit inside cabinets unless it has been designed for that purpose.

6. When to contact a professional

If you have checked the power, cleaned the filters, adjusted the settings and allowed time for the temperature to drop, but your Mestic air conditioner still does not cool properly, it may need professional attention.

Do not attempt to open sealed cooling components or recharge refrigerant yourself. Instead, contact your retailer or a qualified service agent with your model number, purchase details and a description of the issue.

Keeping your Mestic air conditioner performing at its best

Regular cleaning, sensible positioning and an awareness of campsite power limits will help your air conditioner cool more efficiently and last longer. Combine good setup with realistic expectations and you can enjoy cool, comfortable evenings in your caravan, campervan or motorhome – even in the height of summer.
