How to Store Your Mestic Air Conditioner Over Winter

When the touring season winds down, your air conditioner deserves a little attention before it goes into hibernation. A few simple steps at the end of the summer can help your Mestic unit start up cleanly and reliably when the warm weather returns.

1. Let the unit dry out

Moisture left inside an air conditioner can encourage mould and unpleasant odours.

  • Run the unit in fan-only mode for 15–30 minutes to help dry internal surfaces.
  • Switch off and disconnect from the mains once the cycle is complete.

2. Clean or replace the filters

Filters collect dust and particles throughout the season. Cleaning them before storage keeps airflow efficient and helps maintain air quality.

  • Remove filters following the instructions in your product manual.
  • Vacuum gently or wash with mild soapy water if recommended.
  • Allow filters to dry completely before refitting.

3. Wipe down external surfaces

Use a soft cloth and a mild detergent solution to remove surface dust, fingerprints and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive pads that could damage the casing.

4. Protect cables, hoses and accessories

Coil power leads loosely without sharp bends and check any hoses or ducting for damage.

  • Inspect plugs and connectors for signs of wear.
  • Store accessories in a clearly labelled box or bag with the unit.

5. Choose a suitable storage location

Where you store your air conditioner is just as important as how you clean it.

  • Avoid damp garages, leaky sheds or spaces prone to condensation.
  • Keep the unit upright and protect it from dust using a breathable cover.
  • Do not store directly on bare concrete – place it on a shelf or raised board.

6. Make a quick checklist for next season

Before you walk away, note down anything you want to check when you next install the unit – for example, replacing batteries in the remote or reviewing your campsite power requirements.

Start next summer ready to cool

Thoughtful winter storage is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your Mestic air conditioner. With clean filters, dry internals and protected accessories, your unit will be ready to deliver cool, comfortable air as soon as the next touring season begins.
